Reading Strategies Vocabulary Exercise

May 4, 2025 By novapress

When building vocabulary for a standardized test, it can be very frustrating trying to read the dictionary and pick which words and definitions they are most likely to ask.  Instead, let Nova Press guide your vocabulary study.  Our GRE, SAT, and ACT books include extensive vocabulary lists and break them down into the “most likely” and “other probable candidates”.

The first 400 words (the “Ubiquitous 400”) have appeared on the tests a surprisingly frequently.  Read through the list and check the ones you already know.  Then you know where to focus the rest of your time.  You could create flashcards, study them column-by-column, ask other people to quiz you, or any other creative way you decide.  We then provide a list of 4,000 more words that are candidates for the test.

If you’re looking for exercises to test your knowledge, the books include some matching exercises, broken down into smaller groups.  Our books also include a section on etymology.  Studying the origin of words can help you make educated guesses as to their meaning.  That way, if you don’t have time to memorize all 4,000 words, you still have a fighting chance at choosing the correct definition.

Don’t get overwhelmed, flipping through the dictionary, guessing which words to study.  Guide your study with Nova Press.  Our books will help you narrow down the choices and guide you to success.
