Reading Strategies Exercises

April 30, 2025 By novapress

Many of the standardized tests include verbal sections that test reading comprehension.  If you want effective reading strategies exercises, work with Nova Press.  Our books, software, online courses, and Phone and tablet apps include extensive review of all of the skills you need to improve your reading comprehension.  We also include many reading excerpts with accompanying questions, some with answers and explanations right there for you to review and some with answers in a separate section so you can test yourself.

Some books recommend speed-reading the passages. This is a mistake. Speed reading is designed for ordinary, nontechnical material. Because this material is filled with “fluff,” you can skim over the nonessential parts and still get the gist — and often more — of the passage. However, many test-passages are dense. Some are actual quoted articles. Most often, however, they are based on articles that have been condensed to about one-third their original length. During this process no essential information is lost, just the “fluff” is cut. This is why speed reading will not work here — the passages contain too much information. You should, however, read somewhat faster than you normally do, but not to the point that your comprehension suffers. You will have to experiment to find your optimum pace.

Our materials, instead, outline a method that actually works!  Available either as books, software, online courses, or as iPhone and iPad apps, you can access your study materials however you choose.  Work with Nova Press, and we will make sure you have all of the information you need to master whatever test you’re studying for.

Explicit Cause Effect Passages

April 29, 2025 By novapress

While none of the standardized tests have explicit cause and effect passages, they do require you to be competent at determining cause and effect relationships. Nova Press has a variety of books, online courses, software, and apps to help you to master whichever test you will be taking.

Nova Press publishes the finest, most comprehensive test-prep materials available.  Our online courses give you comprehensive and rigorous preparation for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and SAT.  Each course includes over 500 pages of printed material, hundreds of examples and problems, personal feedback from experts, and automatic direction to areas where you need further study.

If you prefer to download software to work with on your computer, we have that, too! Each software program contains the equivalent of over 500 pages of printed material.  There are also two modes you can use when testing yourself.  Mentor mode is an interactive “tutor mode” in which you are immediately told whether or not you answered a problem correctly and allow you to view a solution of the problem.  In Test mode, you can take a test timed and scored by the program.

Our iPhone and iPad apps are currently the the #1 best selling brand of iPhone and iPad apps for the GRE, LSAT, GMAT, MCAT, SAT, and ACT.  Each app comes with hundreds of test questions, the ability to sync your progress across multiple platforms, give you a progress report, and much, much more more.

We also have test prep books for each test.  These are extremely thorough and provide you with clear examples and explanations to help you do your absolute best.  Of course, this is true of all of our products.

You can’t go wrong with Nova Press.  If you’re preparing for an exam, from the SAT to the MCAT, we have the test-prep materials for you!

GRE Preparation Software

April 28, 2025 By novapress

There are a few different options out there for how to prepare for the GRE:  book, tutoring, some kind of test prep course, or software.  Each way has pros and cons, and it’s up to you to choose the one that works the best for you.  If you’re looking for affordable GRE preparation software, though, Nova Press has you covered!  Nova Press’s GRE Software offers a variety of ways to study, whether you want immediate feedback on whether or not an answer was right or if you’d prefer to take the test just the way it will be given.

Nova Press makes sure you have all of the information you need to succeed on the GRE.  The software provides lessons and tips on the math, verbal, and writing sections.  The math section is broken down into seventeen different categories and organized so that you can pick which topic you want to work with.  It outlines what to expect on the test and gives lots of examples with explanations for each topic, so you work to master the concepts.

The reading comprehension section includes techniques on how to approach each reading passage and what to look for in the questions asked.  By learning the six different types of questions asked about a reading passage, you can narrow down the answers right away.  Pivotal words are emphasized so you don’t get fooled by wording on the test.  Finally, Nova Press outlines a three-step method for approaching each reading passage and the questions following it.

Other reading subsections include text completion, vocabulary, and etymology.  The vocabulary list is broken down into two sub-lists:  the 400 most commonly used words on the test and then 4,000 more that could come up.  You get to decide where to spend your time, but the more vocabulary you know, the less of a chance that wording on the test will trip you up.

The writing section provides rubrics, so you know exactly what the test-graders are looking for and can evaluate your own writing with the same criteria.  We include grammar and punctuation reviews as well as tips on how to develop your own writing style.  Writing prompts are provided, some with written responses for you to evaluate while others are for you to practice responding to.

If you’re looking for GRE Prep Software, Nova Press is the way to go.  We provide software with thorough information, structured so that you can focus your studying exactly where you need it.  We also feature flexibility in taking the practice tests, so you can find out immediately after each question whether you got it right or wrong, or you can wait until the end.  Anyway you look at it, Nova Press GRE Software is the best choice for helping you prepare for the GRE.

Download GRE Software

April 28, 2025 By novapress

If you’d rather download GRE software than work with a book, Nova Press’s GRE Software is the way to go.  It’s affordable (only $29.95), thorough (includes extensive reviews on all GRE content matter), and versatile.  You can review material before doing practice problems or jump straight to the testing for a preliminary look at what you need.  It also features two different testing modes: Mentor mode (tells you immediately after every question whether you’re right or wrong) and Test mode (timed and scored by the program).

With our GRE software, you gain access to all of the review information you would get in the book.  There are seventeen different math lessons, covering topics from substitution to geometry, as well as a review of math properties.  Each topic contains clear examples and explanations to help you understand each topic fully.

The reading comprehension section focuses on helping you develop effective reading strategies for test day.  It identifies the six main types of questions asked on the test, so you know what type of answer to choose.  It also outlines an effective three-step method you can use on test-day.

ACT Prep Reading Strategies

April 27, 2025 By novapress

There are many ACT prep reading strategies out there, but you can get the best direction from Nova Press’s ACT Verbal Prep Course. With clear explanations and examples, we make sure you have everything you need to master the ACT.

The ACT Verbal Prep Course addresses each section of the exam separately.  The first section addressed is the English test, then reading, then writing, and then vocabulary.  The English section of the test measures your ability to revise and edit a piece of writing, focusing on two main categories of questions: 1) Usage/Mechanics (punctuation, basic grammar, and sentence structure); and 2) Rhetorical Skills (general writing style and organization).  Punctuation review includes commas, semicolons, colons, dashes, apostrophes, sentence fragments, and run-on sentences.  The grammar review includes pronouns, subject-verb agreement, modifiers, parallelism, verb tense, and diction.  The final section, Rhetoric, focuses on style and structure.

The Reading test presents passages on the following subjects: Humanities (music, dance, theater, art, architecture, languages, ethics, literary criticism, and philosophy); Social Studies (sociology, anthropology, history, geography, psychology, political science, and economics); Natural Sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, and other physical sciences); and Prose Fiction (can be taken from a novel or short story, but don’t expect to have read it before).  Our ACT Verbal Prep Course explains why certain reading methods don’t work and then outlines reading strategies that do.  It details the six types of questions present after each reading excerpt and then gives a three-step method to help you improve your reading comprehension.

For the writing portion, you will be given a prompt to which you must respond.  To prepare you for this, we review style and structure as addressed in the English test section of the book and then dive directly into how to improve your writing.  We give specific suggestions on how to approach your response and provide examples of responses for you to critique.  Finally, many prompts are given for you to practice your writing.

Don’t be fooled by the many different types of ACT Prep reading strategies out there.  Nova Press helps you debunk the myths and develop an effective strategy for approaching the ACT.  Nova Press’s ACT Verbal Prep Course is the way to go.
