Our SAT materials cover all of the major parts of the test.  The reading section helps you to improve your reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary.  Our vocabulary lists are much better for studying than trying to memorize the whole dictionary.  We have two separate the lists:  the Ubiquitous 400 (words that occur frequently on the test) and Vocabulary 4000 (other words that are prime candidates for future SAT tests).  This section also includes vocabulary drills to reinforce your studying.

The writing section reviews the basics of grammar.  Studying grammar may seem boring, but it’s vital to good writing.  This section also reviews punctuation, provides sample rubrics, and sample prompts.  Working thoroughly through this section can help you to develop your own writing style as well learn to evaluate your writing with the same criteria that the test-graders will use.

The math portion reviews every math concept you need to know for the test.  Each topic has its own subsection, full of clear examples and explanations to help you review concepts.  Also included are practice problems, some with solutions and others without, to help you learn how to reason through answer choices on the test.

SAT Prep Materials

May 5, 2025 By novapress

Nova Press’s SAT Prep Course is the way to go when looking for SAT prep materials.  We give a thorough review of all of the math, reading, and writing topics that you’ll need to know.  If you’re ready to get to work, Nova Press is ready to help.

The reading section focuses on a few main sub-categories:  reading comprehension, sentence completion, critical reasoning, and vocabulary.  The reading comprehension section debunks the myths about commonly recommended reading methods and then outlines some approaches that actually work.  We help you learn how to recognize the six main types of questions asked on the test and then how to narrow down the answer choices to fit each question.  We reinforce pivotal words that could change the entire meaning of the reading material, so you don’t get thrown by the wording.  Finally, a concise method is outlined to help you achieve your best on the actual test.  Practice reading material and questions are given in each section along with answers and explanations.

The writing section first clarifies the format of the test so you know exactly what to expect.  We then review grammar rules and common errors, also looking at ways to vary sentence structure and to help you start to find your writing style.  After a brief section on punctuation, we delve into the actual writing.  There are many sample writing prompts along with guides on how to approach them to understand exactly what they’re asking you to write.  The book includes a rubric so you can evaluate your own writing with the same criteria the test-graders use.  We also outline several basic steps that you can use on test day to structure your essay before you start writing.   Several examples of prompts along with possible responses are included for your evaluation, followed by practice prompts for you to practice your writing.

The math section reviews many different concepts.  Each concept has a dedicated section with rules, examples, and practice problems for you to work through, followed by answers and explanations for you to correct your work.  The end of the chapter contains a diagnostic math test, so you can determine whether you need to revisit any specific concept for further review.

The SAT can be a daunting test to prepare for if you don’t have the right materials to study with.  If you choose the Nova Press SAT Prep Course, you will have all of the SAT prep materials that you need.

May 5, 2025 By novapress

Many standardized tests include writing.  If you have pedantic handwriting, you may feel that you can’t get your thoughts out fast enough to do well.  Rather than stress, practice with writing prompts similar to those on the test, along with the correct response time frame.  Nova Press includes many sample writing prompts in their test prep materials, allowing you to prepare sufficiently before test day.

The sections on writing in any of our test prep materials initially review basic concepts to help your writing.  These include basic grammar, sentence structure, and ideas on how to develop your own writing style.  It reviews some commonly misused words or phrases and gives tons of examples.  You also get a chance to review some prompts and sample responses to those prompts.  By seeing other responses, you can learn what are good techniques are used in good writing and ways to improve writing that’s not so hot.

Finally, we provide a number of sample prompts to give you a chance to combine what you’ve learned in the review with your writing skills.  In most cases, rubrics are included so you can evaluate your writing based on the same criteria that will be used by the test-graders.  If you choose to study with one of our online courses, you get access to our test specialists who can answer questions in real time.

While Nova Press cannot directly influence pedantic handwriting, we can help you be prepared for test day and help you learn to structure your writing to be most effective.  That way, you can learn to get your ideas down in an organized and effective way within a time constraint.  Let Nova Press help you prepare for your test.

Reading Strategies Vocabulary Exercise

May 4, 2025 By novapress

When building vocabulary for a standardized test, it can be very frustrating trying to read the dictionary and pick which words and definitions they are most likely to ask.  Instead, let Nova Press guide your vocabulary study.  Our GRE, SAT, and ACT books include extensive vocabulary lists and break them down into the “most likely” and “other probable candidates”.

The first 400 words (the “Ubiquitous 400”) have appeared on the tests a surprisingly frequently.  Read through the list and check the ones you already know.  Then you know where to focus the rest of your time.  You could create flashcards, study them column-by-column, ask other people to quiz you, or any other creative way you decide.  We then provide a list of 4,000 more words that are candidates for the test.

If you’re looking for exercises to test your knowledge, the books include some matching exercises, broken down into smaller groups.  Our books also include a section on etymology.  Studying the origin of words can help you make educated guesses as to their meaning.  That way, if you don’t have time to memorize all 4,000 words, you still have a fighting chance at choosing the correct definition.

Don’t get overwhelmed, flipping through the dictionary, guessing which words to study.  Guide your study with Nova Press.  Our books will help you narrow down the choices and guide you to success.
