Analogies Practice

April 23, 2025 By novapress

If you’re looking for analogies practice, you may not need it.  While the SAT, ACT, and GRE all used to have sections devoted to analogies (cat is to dog as ….  Well, you get the idea), all tests have been revamped to exclude this section.  Rather, the test may utilize reading excerpts that contain analogies or may have writing prompts that can be best answered with analogies.  Regardless, you can get the practice you need for any and all tests with Nova Press’s test prep books.

For each test, a section (or sometimes an entire book) is devoted to the verbal and writing requirements.  Whether you need to build your vocabulary, review grammar and/or punctuation rules, or develop your writing style, we have steps you can take to improve your score.  The writing sections contain prompts, some with sample responses while others are for you to practice your writing.  Rubrics are included so you can evaluate your own writing based on the same criteria the test-graders will use.

The reading sections contain many sample excerpts and questions.  The beginning ones include explanations on how to arrive at the correct answers.  Later excerpts and questions are left for you to figure out on your own, though the answers are given in a later section for your reference.

Don’t stress about analogies prep!  Instead, work towards developing your own writing style and incorporating analogies.  Or work on recognizing the meaning of analogies in reading excerpts.  Either way, work with Nova Press to achieve your best.

Nova SAT Satellite

April 22, 2025 By novapress

There are three main categories to focus on when studying for the SAT: reading, writing and math.  By working with Nova Press’s SAT Prep Course, you’ll be well-situated to improve your score on the SAT and feel more prepared on test day.

The reading section focuses on the following sub-categories:  reading comprehension, sentence completion, critical reasoning, and vocabulary.  The reading comprehension section debunks myths about commonly recommended reading methods and then outlines some approaches that actually work.  We help you learn how to recognize the six main types of questions asked on the test and then teach you how to narrow down the answer choices that fit each type.  We reinforce pivotal words that could change the entire meaning of the reading material, so you don’t get thrown by the wording.  Finally, a concise method is outlined to help you achieve your best on the actual test.  Practice reading material and questions are given in each sub-section along with answers and explanations.

The writing section first clarifies the format of the test so you know exactly what to expect.  We then review grammar rules and common errors, also looking at ways to vary sentence structure and to help you develop your own writing style.  After a brief section on punctuation, we delve into the actual writing.  There are many sample writing prompts along with guides on how to approach the prompts to understand exactly what the test-writers asking you to write.  The book includes a rubric so you can evaluate your own writing with the same criteria the test-graders use.  We also outline several basic steps that you can use on test day to structure your essay before you start writing.   Several examples of prompts along with possible responses are included for your evaluation, followed by practice prompts for you to further practice your writing.

The math section reviews many different concepts.  Each concept has a section with rules, examples, and practice problems for you to work through, followed by answers and explanations for you to correct your work.  The end of the chapter contains a diagnostic math test, so you can determine whether you need to revisit any specific concept for further review.

Don’t let preparing for the SAT freak you out.  By working with Nova Press’s SAT Prep Course, you’ll be prepared to master the SAT on test day.

Data Sufficiency

April 22, 2025 By novapress

Don’t let the data sufficiency questions on the GMAT throw you off your game.  The Nova Press GMAT Prep Course clarifies the directions, outlines methods to use during the test to improve your score, warns against common problems, and provides ways for you to check yourself.

The content on the data sufficiency part of the exam is not anymore difficult than the content in the rest of the math section.  Rather, the complicated directions are what increase the difficulty level.  By working with Nova Press, you can know the directions before walking into the test and be clear on what they’re actually looking for.  We outline how to work through a problem and give clear explanations, so you can follow the reasoning.

Knowing which answers to eliminate can also be key to improving your score.  The Nova’s GMAT Prep Course walks step-by-step through how to know which answers to eliminate.  We give numerous examples with explanations to help you understand the reasoning process, work in a section on warning you about unwarranted assumptions, and how to check extreme cases.

After all of this, you get a chance to work through three sets of problems on your own.  The answers (with explanations) are given in a separate section, so you can check your answers at the end.

Rather than worry about how to study for the data sufficiency section of the GMAT, work with Nova Press.  our GMAT Prep Course will make sure you have all of the information you need to master this section (and the rest) of the GMAT.
